NEGOTIATION SKILLS

When do we need negotiating skills?

Negotiation skills are useful during the entire life-cycle of a programme or project and are needed:

* when liasing with clients

* when working with different projects, stakeholders or groups

* managing budgets

* maintaining deadlines

* dealing with staff (conflicts and disputes)

Some of the topics covered during the course include:

* why and when do we negotiate
* principles and types of negotiations
* strategies for successful negotiation
* techniques on how to structure a negotiation
* common problems confronted when negotiating

Methodology

* through a flexible mix of input sessions and role plays, participants will learn both theory and practical tools for effective negotiating,
* whilst a final case study session will give participants the chance to practice the newly acquired skills at length.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION FOR DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

Southern Hemisphere’s 4-day courses in Project Monitoring and Evaluation, held in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 2001 were a phenomenal success and we therefore invite applications from
interested individuals or organisations for our 2002 course.

Who is the course for?

* Leaders, project managers, monitoring officials, development workers and those responsible for implementing a monitoring and evaluation function at their organisation.

Some of the outcomes of the course include:

* identify and develop “SMART” objectives and indicators
* plan a stakeholders analysis
* select a framework for conducting and evaluation
* identify quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques
* construct an evaluation report

Methodology

* intensive subject matter
* the course is run in a workshop style with a high level of participant involvement
* for this reason the course size will be limited to 20 participants to facilitate maximum interaction with participants
* a case-study approach is also adopted, and for this reason participants should come to the workshop with a project in mind to work on throughout the course.

HUMAN RIGHTS INDICATORS

This course aims to create awareness and debate of HOW DEVELOPMENT and HUMAN RIGHTS are measured by various international bodies, such as the UNDP, Amnesty International, Charles Humana, as well as showing how knowledge of the indicators can be used by civil society to exercise some control over the state. This course will offer new ideas and tools to measure development, to
build new indicators, to evaluate the different programmes of their organisations.

Who is this course for?

* policy developers, development practitioners, state ministries, NGO’s, Individuals and organisations preparing to participate in the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD).

Some of the topics in the course include:

* usefulness of indicators
* understanding the connection between Human Development and Human Rights
* tools used by the UNDP to measure Human Development and Human Rights
* problems related to the measurement of human rights
* new ideas and new tools to measure development and to build new indicators to evaluate different kind of programmes

* Reflection and exchange on the experience of participants
