Hesperian publications are written simply and include many illustrations =
so
people with little formal education can understand, apply, and share
medical information. Topics of our current and future publications includ=
e
environmental health, "free" trade zone workers' health and safety,
HIV/AIDS, women's health, midwifery, mental health, children with
disabilities, health worker training, rehabilitation, and dentistry. Our
books and newsletters are used in marginalized communities around the
world, including the United States. Our flagship publication, Where There
Is No Doctor, is considered to be one of the most accessible and widely
used community health books in the world.

Job description:
The editorial coordinator provides editorial oversight and support to
specific publication projects at Hesperian. The editorial coordinator als=
o
understands Hesperian's mission and is responsible for projecting that
mission into the content and presentation of our publications. S/he works
as a team with the managing editor and the publications director.

Specific job responsibilities include:
=B7 Assessing and editing content of our publications in English and Span=
ish
to ensure consistency with Hesperian style, philosophy, easy-to-understan=
d
language, and practical approach
=B7 Drafting newsletter articles or book chapters as needed
=B7 Coordinating Spanish-language translation process (arranging for outs=
ide
translation and in-house editing)
=B7 Collaboratively developing popular health education learning activiti=
es
=B7 Contributing to editorial discussions and decision-making for all boo=
k
projects
=B7 Building and maintaining relationships with advisors and partner
organizations
=B7 Participating in Hesperian staff meetings, retreats, organizational
planning processes, and periodic reviews
Qualifications:
The Hesperian Foundation seeks an individual with an understanding of the
issues and politics surrounding community health and development. S/he
should demonstrate:
=B7 Strong editing and writing skills for low-literacy publication
=B7 Fluency in both English and Spanish
=B7 Grassroots experience in less developed countries or in immigrant or
marginalized communities in the United States, preferably related to heal=
th
=B7 Good time and project management skills, especially in supporting
multiple projects
=B7 Interest in popular education
=B7 Commitment to social justic

Compensation:
Full-time salary is $35,000 to $42,000 depending on experience. Package
includes excellent medical and dental benefits.

Project Associate/Research Coordinator for Environmental Health Book

groups can organize to improve health conditions in their communities. Ou=

publication, Where There Is No Doctor, is considered to be one of the mos=
t
accessible and widely used community health books in the world.

We are seeking a full-time staff member to work on a current Hesperian bo=
ok
project: A Community Guide to Environmental Health. This manual will help
communities identify health problems related to environmental hazards, an=
d
suggest practical solutions that can be implemented at the individual,
community, and regional levels. These hazards range from pesticide
exposure, from waste management and sanitation to genetically modified
foods. The book's handling of these issues will focus on grassroots
organization and preventative action, as well as public health
interventions and appropriate local solutions.

As with all Hesperian books, the environmental health book will be
accessible to people with varying levels of formal education, will be
heavily illustrated, and will emphasize community participation. The book
has a target release date of 2005.

Position description:
The Project Associate/Research Coordinator will be responsible for many o=
f
the tasks associated with a long-term collaborative research and writing
project. S/he will review and manage the research and writing of other
staff, volunteers, and outside collaborators. S/he will be responsible fo=
r
interface with community groups, field testers, and expert reviewers, and
for recruiting, training and supervising part-time researchers, volunteer=
s
and interns. S/he could also be involved in drafting sections of the
manual, and working with artists and graphic designers to prepare materia=
ls
for review and field-testing. S/he will work primarily in the Hesperian
Foundation's Berkeley office but occasional domestic and international
travel may be required.

Qualifications:
=B7 Grassroots experience in less developed countries or in immigrant
communities in the United States, preferably related to environmental hea=
lth
=B7 Research experience on international health, development and
environmental issues
=B7 Strong editorial/analytical skills
=B7 Ability to write clearly for a non-technical/low-literacy audience
=B7 Ability to work collaboratively and independently
=B7 Good time and project management skills, especially in supporting
multiple activities
=B7 Commitment to social justice
=B7 Interest in popular education
=B7 Ability to write English clearly
=B7 Non-English language skills preferred

Compensation:
Full-time starting salary is $29,500 to $35,000 depending on experience.
