INTERNS FOR THE IMADR OFFICE IN GENEVA

FOR UN COMMISSION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

URGENT RECRUITMENT OF INTERNS FOR THE IMADR OFFICE IN GENEVA
FOR UN COMMISSION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Aims:

The aims of our internship programme is to provide regional, national or local human rights activists, and/or students who have strong concerns over human rights issues, in particular those pertaining to racism and racial discrimination, with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with UN human rights mechanisms through their participation in relevant UN meetings, or through research work. Unfortunately, our organization is not in a position to offer financial assistance to interns.

Whilst long-term internships are preferred, at present, the IMADR-UN Office (Geneva) is urgently seeking a number of short-term interns to monitor the following UN meetings:

UN Commission on Human Rights (57th session, 19 March - 27 April 2001).
Working Group of the Preparatory Committee for the World Conference against Racism (7-11 May 2001)
Working Group on Minorities (14-18 May 2001)
Second meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the World Conference against Racism (21 May-1 June 2001)

Duties:

The interns are responsible for monitoring meetings, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00. When an evening (until 21:00) or a night session (until 24:00) is scheduled, division of labour will be set up. While the working language is English, some knowledge of French, Spanish and /or Japanese is considered an advantage.

The duty of interns will include:
- obtaining UN documents for the meetings
- collecting UN press releases on the meetings concerned
- collecting a copy of each intervention relevant to IMADR's mandate
- attending NGOs' (or governments') parallel activities when pertinent to IMADR's mandate
- assisting the IMADR-UN Office with basic administrative work during closed
