Dear Sir/Madam,
GOLDEN JUBILEE CONGRESS OF HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF NIGERIA:
APPEAL FOR SUPPORT.
The Historical Society of Nigeria, the umbrella body of
professional Historians in Nigeria, will be marking its fifty
years of existence this year (1955-2005). To mark this rare
feat, a Golden Jubilee Anniversary Conference has been slated
for the third week of October 2005, with the theme:
“Historical Society of Nigeria at 50: Reflections on the
Discipline of History”. It is hoped that the occasion will
reinvigorate historical consciousness and scholarship in
Nigeria.
The Society is remarkable in very many respects. Its founding
fathers at the then University College Ibadan, started and
nurtured the study of African History as a respectable and
worthy field of academic study in institutions of learning
all over the world . Also Historians have contributed
immensely to the challenge of nation building that Nigeria
was confronted with at Independence. They dotted the
administrative cadre in our Universities as Vice-Chancellors,
in our ministries as distinguished administrators and
technocrats, and even the banks and other sectors of the
Nigerian economy.
It is our belief that the present gloom in our affairs as a
country is partly attributable to the jettisoning of History
in our institutions of learning, with the consequence of a
withering of our sense of history as a people? To reverse
this trend, the 50th Anniversary Conference is focused
towards bringing about a resorgimento in the fortunes of
History as a discipline and its resuscitation in the psyche
of Nigerians.
Expectedly, the conference will attract scholars for within
and outside the country, especially as the Historical Society
of Nigeria played pioneering roles in the induction and
dispersal of African History as an intellectual discipline.
It is to this worthy course of assisting in the resurgence of
impacting a sense of History in our people that we are asking
that you be part of a noble task indeed.
We count very much on you and your organization in terms of
publicity and any other assistance you might be able to
render.
The Historical Society of Nigeria holds your Centre in very
high esteem and hopes that you will partner with it to host a
befitting and successful Golden Jubilee Anniversary
Conference.For further details contact.
