Cameroon: Birfdlife International seeks Chief Technical Officer

GASHAKA GUMTI TCHABAL MBABO PROJECT
The GASHAKA GUMTI TCHABAL MBABO PROJECT, funded by GEF-
UNDP aims, through a partnership of local communities,
government agencies and NGOs to address the root causes
of biodiversity loss in the ecosystems of Gashaka Gumti
(Nigeria) and Tchabal Mbabo (Cameroon). The montane
forests of Nigeria & Cameroon (of which these ecosystems
form a part) are globally important for biodiversity and
the project aims to ensure their conservation and
sustainable management by empowering local communities
with capacity, knowledge and skills for sustainable
natural resource management. The project will also help
identify appropriate legal protection status for Tchabal
Mbabo, increase capacity in NGOs and government for
community-based approaches to protected area planning and
facilitate co-operation between conservation agencies in
Cameroon and Nigeria.
A CHIEF TECHNICAL ADVISOR (CTA) is being sought for 15
months, starting in March/April 2002. Responsibilities
include the co-ordination of technical and administrative
aspects of the project, as well as the development and
production of a proposal for a Full Project. The CTA will
supervise staff and consultants employed by the project,
liase and co-ordinate project partners in Nigeria and
Cameroon, and secure funding for a Full Project. Salary
range is £26-28,000 per annum (inclusive of 12% pension
contribution).
The CTA will have the following qualifications:
* An advanced university degree (PhD / MSc) in a
discipline related to natural sciences
* Five years international experience in project
development and management related to conservation.
* Experience of working with a variety of people,
including government officials, international and
national NGOs, local stakeholders, experts and
consultants.
* Experience in writing project proposals for
international donors (knowledge of the GEF-UNDP project
cycle a distinct advantage).
* Knowledge of the environmental sector within Cameroon
(and preferably of Nigeria).
* Excellent writing, administrative, planning and
communication skills.
* Fluency in written and spoken English and French.
