VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) is an international, pan-African,
non-governmental development organisation for African women based in the UK
with an Africa regional office in Kampala, Uganda. AMwA was set up in 1985
by women from different parts of Africa resident in the United Kingdom.
Translated from Swahili, the name means `solidarity among African women',
signifying African sisterhood. AMwA coordinates local, regional and
international initiatives, and builds the individual and organisational
leadership capacities of African women through leadership development
programs, networking, information and advocacy.

AMwA is hereby seeking 3 African women who are motivated self starters, to
fill the following posts:

Volunteer Coordinator (part time 17.5 hours per week)
£22922.00 pro rata
Initially for 3 years

The post holder will be expected to develop and manage AMwA’s volunteer
project. This will include recruiting. placing and managing volunteers,
representing AMwA at various public events and report writing.

The post holder will have experience of working with and managing
volunteers, excellent administrative, written and verbal communication
skills. The post holder will also be able to work to tight deadlines with
minimum supervision.

Finance and Administrative Officer
Circa $16,000 – £18,000 (inclusive of London Weighting)
Initially for 2 years

The post holder will be responsible for providing financial and
administrative support to AMwA’s operations in the UK and Africa, and for
ensuring the smooth running of AMwA’s financial systems and controls.

The post holder will be working towards a recognized, professional
qualification in accounting. She will also have a minimum of 2 years
experience working in an accounting and office admin environment. In depth
knowledge and experience of working with computerized accounting packages
(in particular, SAGE), and the ability to work to tight deadlines with
minimum supervision are also essential.

Personal Assistant to Director/International Programmes Officer
Circa £18,000 - £20,000 (Inclusive of London Weighting)
Initially for 2 years

The post holder will provide secretarial and administrative support to the
Director, as well as coordinate activities for the preparation of AMwA’s
international programmes. This includes providing secretarial and
administrative support to the director, liaising with a broad range of AMwA
partners in Africa, and major conference organizing.

The post holder will have excellent administrative, organizing, written and
communication skills. She will have advanced knowledge of the current issues
and debates on gender and development in Africa. In addition, she will have
the ability to develop her work with minimum supervision. Knowledge of
French is desirable.

These posts entail provision of personal services for African women. They
are therefore advertised under Section 5(2)(d) of the Race Relations Act
(1976) and the Sex Discrimination Act (1975).
