Announcement and Call for Abstracts for SETAC conference on Sustainability : "Decision-Making Tools for Sustainability: Environmental, Social, and Economic"
This topic will be the subject of a special session at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), November 11 - 15, 2001, Baltimore, MD. The paradigm of sustainability, with its three aspects of environmental, economic and social sustainability, has become accepted as the goal of public policy. There are a number of alternative technologies, metrics and tools that provide information to support sustainability decisions. These alternatives have arisen through different approaches, including human health risk assessment, ecological risk assessment, and life cycle assessment. Managers who are faced with decisions are often not sure which among the many approaches and tools best suits their specific application. This session will be designed to assess the value of the various tools to support the assessment of sustainability from a variety of perspectives and explore the alignment of each tool with a broad array of decision types. Presentations will be made by representatives of 1) the private and public sector; 2) tool developers and 3) environmental, social and economic scientific communities. The session will consist of two parts, a morning series of platform presentations, which will present, compare and contrast tools to support progress towards sustainability. In the afternoon, an interactive poster session will offer case studies. SETAC's Life Cycle Assessment and Ecological Risk Assessment Advisory Groups are jointly sponsoring the sessions. Additional information and guidance can be found in the attached file, or to submit an abstract for consideration, go to www.setac.org. Abstracts are due by May 1, 2001.
