The Protocol guarantees comprehensive rights to women and provides a formidable legal framework to address the violence and discrimination against them. It was informed by African realities and negotiated by Africans for Africans.

On 14 April 2014, the terrorist group, Boko Haram, attacked a Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Nigeria, abducting about 300 schoolgirls in the middle of the night from their sleeping quarters.

On 11 July 2013, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women (the Protocol) turns 10. Looking back on the past decade, there is much to celebrate.
