In 2001, I was a politically naive young Zimbabwean immigrant living in the slums of Johannesburg when, as a member of a local civic group, we got wind of an impending eviction of ‘squatters’ who had illegally occupied a piece of land on the outskirts of Johannesburg called Bredell.

Zimbabwe’s land issue has generated unprecedented debates both within and outside the country.
