The Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation is hosting a seminar on the impact of war: Political, social, and psychological consequences.

Speakers include

* Steven Friedman, director of the Centre for Policy Studies, who will be
talking about the socio-political implications of war for South Africa;
* Sherbanu Sacoor a psychologist at the CSVRs Trauma Clinic, who will be
talking about the impact of terrorism and war on communities, and how
collective trauma can lead to further acts of violence;
* Lindi Mkhondo, CSVR psychologist and researcher, who will talk about
therapy support groups currently being run with South African war veterans,
highlighting the immense personal, social and psychological costs that these
men still endure as a result of their involvement in the liberation
struggle;
* Mary Robertson, Manager of the CSVRs Trauma Clinic, will present a
psychological assessment of group of refugee children living in
Johannesburg, focusing on the trauma they have been exposed to and their
resiliency and vulnerability.

The current focus on the recent terror attacks in the United States and the
retaliatory bombings in Afghanistan have again swept African wars and
devastation off the worlds agenda.

This seminar will highlight some of the consequences of war, from the
macro-political level, through to the individual psychological consequences
for soldiers. Speakers will present original material in particular, the
psychological case studies of South African war veterans and on refugee
children in Johannesburg will be heard for the first time.
