From 7 to 11 of July 2016, Juba, the capital of South Sudan, was put under serious tension and constant bombardment as a result of the fight that erupted once again since December 2013 between the forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and former First Vice-President Dr Riek Machar.

Warring parties in South Sudan’s brutal 20-month civil war signed a peace agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on August 26, 2015.

In December 2013, a political dispute within South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), escalated into an armed confrontation in Juba involving forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar.

Superficial and politically massaged transitional justice processes for South Sudan cannot bring lasting peace and co-existence in the country that is tribally and ethnically fragmented.
