In recent months, media in Kenya has reported the re-emergence of the terror group Mungiki in parts of the central region. Mungiki, an exclusively Kikuyu ethnic militia, has over the years been blamed for atrocious violence and extortion in central Kenya, the Rift Valley and Nairobi.

The groundbreaking case pits the state monopoly Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and its long-serving CEO Edward Njoroge against the Nairobi Law Monthly magazine published by lawyer Ahmednassir Abdullahi. Hearing commences on 6 November.

The attacks occurred shortly after 10am local time as prayer services were in progress at the African Inland Church (AIC) and the Catholic cathedral in the town. All 17 deaths occurred in the AIC church.
