The old way

The ‘Arab Spring’ and lessons for South Africa’s student movement

Cuba’s efforts to roll-back racism offer valuable lessons for South Africa, where racism, because of the legacy of colonialism, slavery and apartheid, is deeply ingrained within institutions, social relations and everyday behaviour.

In 1885, European countries held the Berlin Conference in the city of Berlin, Germany. The goal of the conference was to divide Africa amongst themselves wherein its mineral riches would be shipped to Europe for industrial development.

The end of juridical apartheid in 1994 brought hope to many, especially those who had suffered centuries of racial subjugation and exploitation. The much vaunted rainbow nation and the narrative of a non-racial society spelled a new beginning.

I would like to have written many things when I was in Azania, but unfortunately things do not always go as planned. There I did not have enough time to be alone and write, and since I had difficulties in connecting to the internet, it became a little more difficult.
