Amnesty International Holds a Training Seminar
for Human Rights Defenders in Cairo from 7-9 July 2001

In cooperation with the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP), Amnesty International will hold the Training Seminar for Human Rights Defenders -North Africa. The training will focus on national and international human rights mechanisms. It will be held at the Flamenco Hotel, Zamalik, Cairo from 7 to 9 July 2001.

The seminar aims at training human rights defenders from North Africa in national and international human rights mechanisms through widening their knowledge of international treaties, in addition to providing the opportunity to exchange experience, and strengthen support between human rights defenders in the region.

The seminar will be attended by jurists, journalists and other public figures. It will start with a speech by Ambassador Shadia Farag, Assistant of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights, then speeches by both Amnesty International and the ACIJLP.

Twenty-five trainees from human rights activists from Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco will attend the training.

This is the first training held by Amnesty International on this issue in Egypt. Lectures in the training will be given by experts from Amnesty
International, The Arab Institute for Human Rights, Hisham Mubarak Center for Human Rights, Nadeem Center, The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession.
