SANGONeT is pleased to announce that it will start the development of an exciting new Internet portal on 1 October 2001, namely Thusanang: Southern Africa's Online Funding Resource Facility. The objective of this proposed facility is to develop and maintain a user-friendly "one-stop" Internet entry point to information on Southern African development funding issues. It will present funders and related institutions with a tool to disseminate and communicate information to NGOs on their funding activities in Southern Africa. At the same time, it will present Southern African NGOs with an up-to-date information and capacity-building resource to enhance their fundraising efforts.

Thusanang will showcase the work of all local and international development
funding agencies operating in Southern Africa, including the private and
public sectors. Special attention will also be given to the work of national
and regional institutions such as the Southern African Grantmakers'
Association (SAGA), Southern African Institute of Fundraising (SAIF),
Non-Profit Partnership (NPP), MWENGO's Regional Resource Mobilisation
Programme, regional development banks and national NGO councils.

Issues and categories of information to be covered include funding news
(national lotteries, announcements, research findings, etc.), funding and
donor information (corporate sector, private foundations, multilaterals,
bilateral, parastatals, government, etc.), online fundraising and donation
requests, tenders, discussion forums, best practices, training courses,
publications, vacancies, volunteering opportunities, support documentation
and resources, sponsorship and advertising opportunities, links and a
helpline.

This Internet facility will be based on similar and related initiatives
developed in other parts of the world, but will be customised to Southern
African circumstances. Given the Internet's ever-expanding role as an
electronic clearinghouse of information, Thusanang will present funders and
NGOs with an opportunity to transmit and receive information with increased
efficiency, speed and reduced cost.

SANGONeT has secured financial assistance from USAID's Civil Society
Strengthening Programme (CSSP) to support the development and implementation
of Thusanang over the next two years.

SANGONeT would be very interested in your views, comments, ideas and
expectations to ensure that Thusanang incorporates all the development
funding information needs and requirements of the Southern African
development community.

Thusanang will become available by March 2002 at http://www.funding.org.za
and http://www.thusanang.org.za

SANGONeT will keep all interested parties informed during the next few
months on developments around the implementation of Thusanang.
