Africa: Programme officer – Education for Social Justice (ESJ)

Programme officer – Education for Social Justice (ESJ)
Fahamu is looking for qualified candidates for the post of Programme officer, Education for Social Justice. Successful candidates would have a responsibility for developing curriculums and training our diverse audiences in human rights and social justice topics as well as online tutoring. The candidate is also expected to have experience in community training and organizing for a pan-African audience.
Fahamu’s Education for Social Justice Programme (ESJ) primarily focuses on strengthening professional competencies of our pan - African audiences but also delivers courses internationally, building organizational capacity through individual and team training. Since 2005, Fahamu has trained staff from over 400 organizations including human rights organizations, churches, grassroots women’s organizations, development organizations, Kenyan police and prison officers, the Rwandan and Kenyan military, National Human Rights institutions, UN agencies, youth organizations and private sector organizations from 52 countries including Ethiopia, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The closing date for applications is 15th June 2009. The successful candidate will be located in Nairobi, Kenya.
Reporting to the Director of the ESJ program, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
• Assisting in developing and expanding Fahamu’s ESJ programme, with a particular emphasis on enabling social movements and vulnerable groups to access learning for social justice
• Assisting in designing and implementing ESJ strategies and programmes
• Assisting in designing and implementing strategies for partnerships with learning institutions and organizations
• Assisting in developing, reviewing and editing of training content on the learning for change programme
• Coordination and facilitation of courses including
- Workshop organization
- Logistical coordination
- Managing communications with participants and facilitators/trainers.
- Tutoring of distance learning courses
• Assisting in identifying funding sources and securing funding for the program
• Researching and conceptualizing ways to further the innovative use of technologies to make access to education for social justice more widely accessible
• Any other duties in relation to ESJ that may be assigned and agreed
Minimum requirements:
* Undergraduate degree in a related field
* At least 6 years of experience in human rights and social justice education.
* Experience in community training
* Experience in online training
* Experience in course and curriculum development
* Willingness to travel extensively throughout Africa
Desired skills:
Second language skills in Swahili, French and/or Arabic plus fund raising experience.
