Description: : The researcher will work on children's human rights
issues in Africa. S/he will be responsible for ongoing research and
advocacy efforts, and will play an important role in determining
strategies for dealing with human rights issues as they affect children.
S/he will carry out fact-finding missions to target countries, write and
publicize reports on findings, develop advocacy strategies, and present
human rights concerns to governments, intergovernmental and
nongovernmental organization, and the press. S/he will write press
releases, articles, op-eds, and position papers. The position is based
in our New York office.

The Children's Rights Division has worked on a range of children's human
rights issues in Africa, including: children affected by HIV/AIDS,
police violence against street children, corporal punishment in schools,
refugees, child soldiers, and child slavery. We would also like to work
on child labor, including child domestics, child trafficking, and
child-headed households. The researcher will coordinate research and
advocacy plans with other HRW thematic and regional divisions, and will
be responsible for choosing, in consultation with HRW staffers, which
issues to take on. S/he may also be r esponsible for editing and other
division tasks.

Education: Master (MA, MSW, etc.)
Languages: English
Additional Qualifications: An advanced degree in law, public health,
international relations, or a related field; and two to three years of
experience in human rights or children's rights. Fluency in English and
French is required. The candidate should be highly motivated, organized,
and able to work under pressure and juggle multiple tasks. S/he must
have research experience and excellent oral and written communication
and advocacy skills, and experience working alone or as part of a team.
Field experience in Africa is required.
