INVITATION TO THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON "WALTER RODNEY - THE
REVOLUTIONARY INTELLETUAL"
This is to invite you to the International Conference on "Walter Rodney -
The Revolutionary Intellectual". The Conference is being organized by the
Institute of Development Studies of the University of Dar Es Salaam, in
collaboration with the Development Policy Management Forum based in Addis
Ababa; African Association of Political Science, Africa Institute of South
Africa, and CODESRIA based in Senegal. The conference will be held on 16th -
17th January 2006 in the Council Chamber at the University of Dar es Salaam.
Walter Rodney was an intellectual who developed some of the most
revolutionary ideas in response to the challenges facing African societies
and states. This conference is being convened to discuss and debate Rodney's
life and ideas as well as critically revisit the 1960s and 1970s debates in
light of changing and changed paradigms of the current period of
liberalization and intellectual eclecticism. It will bring together both
African scholars and activists of Rodney's generation as well as the younger
scholars who have only heard of Rodney.
The conference themes include Imperialism and Globalization, African
Development, State and Class as Agencies of Change in Africa, Revisiting
Nationalism and Pan-Africanism, Role of the Intellectual in African
Liberation, etc. Those who want to submit papers are advised to send them
electronically to the undersigned as soon as possible.
Unfortunately because of limited funds we are not able to bring in from
abroad everybody that we would have wanted to attend this conference.
CODESRIA, DPMF, AISA, OSSREA, AAPS and the Ford Foundation each is
sponsoring few colleagues to the conference. We request those from abroad
who cannot benefit from this grant to sponsor themselves, and we assure them
all of typical Tanzanian hospitality. Unfortunately also we cannot meet the
travel costs of local participants
The Conference Organisers will be able to provide at the conference lunches
and refreshments during tea breaks.
Kindly confirm to the undersigned your acceptance by e-mail, fax or phone as
soon as possible, but definitely not later than 10th January 2006.
Attached, please, find a Tentative Programme.
Yours Sincerely,
Prof. Haroub Othman
