The Unga Revolution, a ‘self motivated and non-violent movement of the people of Kenya aimed at realising all the rights and privileges as enshrined in the constitution of Kenya’ has called on the government to ensure that all citizens are guaranteed their right to food, shelter, healthcare, education and social security, as enshrined in Article 43 of the country’s constitution, in part by reducing the prices of basic commodities.
DATE: 31ST MAY 2011
FROM: UNGA REVOLUTION STEERING COMMITTEE
TO: THE PRESIDENT & THE PRIME MINISTER OF KENYA
HARAMBEE AVENUE
NAIROBI
SUBJECT: REDUCTION OF PRICES OF BASIC COMMODITIES
We the Kenyan People under the Banner of The Unga Revolution cognizant of Article 1 (1)- the Sovereignty of the people-which states that all sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya and shall be exercised only in accordance with the constitution of Kenya gather here today the 31st May 2011 to ask and reclaim what is rightfully ours as citizens of Kenya.
The Unga Revolution is self motivated and non-violent movement of the people of Kenya aimed at realizing all the rights and privileges as enshrined in the constitution of Kenya.
The Unga Revolution therefore states THAT:
1. Contrary to the Article 43 of the constitution of Kenya, which guarantees every citizen Right to Food, Shelter, Healthcare, Education and Social Security, many Kenyans still languish in abject poverty, die due to hunger and Dehydration, and die due to lack of Medicine in Hospitals.
2. The prices of basic commodities have skyrocketed making them out of reach to many Kenyans, Contrary to Article 43 of the constitution of Kenya. Many still Walk to Work due to high bus fares, many still die in homes due to high cost of medicine, many still fail to get education due to high school and college fees and congestion in class rooms and lecture theatres, many still live in squalid conditions due to lack of adequate and accessible housing, many still die due to waterborne diseases and many continue to die due to high rate of insecurity.
Having stated this, The Unga Revolution DEMANDS THAT:
1. You announce here today the reduction of prices of all basic commodities
2. The government must create a subsidy fund and immediately start SUBSIDIZING basic commodities in the whole country
3. The government must immediately nationalize the food sector and the oil sector and protect the Mwananchi from profiteers and exploiters.
4. The government must build silos and modern storage facilities in all Agriculturally productive areas
5. The government must recover all grabbed agriculturally productive lands
6. The government must immediately start a program to support all the unemployed Kenyans and others who cannot support themselves.
7. The government must initiate a program, with clear timelines, to provide free education, up to tertiary levels, for all Kenyans who are willing and able to learn.
8. The government must guarantee free and quality healthcare services and ensure that all government health care facilities are sufficiently staffed and stocked.
9. The government must immediately start a “national building” program to provide basic housing to all couples who have or are ready to start a family.
10. The government must immediately remove all undue privileges it gives to any section of society at the expense of the people’s interests, especially those given to public officers.
Finally, the Unga Revolution gives you three options:
1. THAT You can choose to become part of the solution and join the Unga Revolution in solving the problem
2. THAT You can choose to remain a part of the problem and be solved with the problem
3. THAT You RESIGN, STEP DOWN and see us solve the problem.
WE, THE PEOPLE, ARE READY TO LEAD THE GOVERNMENT AND PROVIDE THE BASIC NEEDS
