Civic Education on the Constitution in Kenya
As we prepare for the forthcoming General elections, we cannot ignore the increase of organisations which have come up offering to the general public civic education on the constitution. I wish to compliment them and urge them to go on even after true reforms. Constitutionalism should be infinite.
These groups have been sparked by the ongoing reforms by the Commissioned Constitution Review Team which was appointed to come up with a new constitution before the general elections which are to be held this year. Their main objective being to as effectively as possible reach out to people such that as the Review Commission collects views the citizens are aware of what is going on and how they can participate in the review process with their views.
Civic Education facilitators are being trained to carry out this task and for once in many years, there is an utopic consortium which is targeting even in those most geographically marginalized with vital information which could transform their ways of life and lead them to development out of poverty, ignorance and strife.
As long as the organisations are non-partisan, this kind of informal education will play a great role in the making of our constitution with the views of the citizens incorporated since the information will empower people to make informed choices.
It is my aspiration that this wave of civic education will enable Kenyans to give clear views on how they would like their constitution to defend especially their basic rights which include most importantly and at the moment in deficiency; security and socio-economic.
It is also my hope that the general citizenry will embrace this free informal education with seriousness and where they are not clear on issues consult and make sure that they have the making of their constitution in their own hands for a better country. Let no bill regarding issues that affect us directly be passed without our participation because of our ignorance. Remember the weapon of exploitation can only be used on the ignorant.
