Africa: Senior Senior Lecturer/ Lecturer in Leadership

The Institute of Peace, Leadership and Governance (IPLG) at Africa University invites applicants for a Senior Lecturer or Lecturer in Leadership. The Institute seeks to contribute to a culture of peace, good governance, security and socio-economic development in Africa through research, teaching, networking and community-level action. IPLG provides a focus for training, research and documentation in the areas of peace, leadership and governance in Africa with a view to developing the skills of students and practitioners in these areas

The Institute of Peace, Leadership and Governance (IPLG) at Africa University invites applicants for a Senior Lecturer or Lecturer in Leadership. The Institute seeks to contribute to a culture of peace, good governance, security and socio-economic development in Africa through research, teaching, networking and community-level action. IPLG provides a focus for training, research and documentation in the areas of peace, leadership and governance in Africa with a view to developing the skills of students and practitioners in these areas.

Duties and Responsibilities
This position involves a mix of teaching and administrative responsibilities. These are:
- Develop and update curricula in the Leadership discipline
- Teach the theory and practice of Leadership
- Contribute to the core research programme in IPLG
- Mentor, supervise and train students in Leadership analysis and Leadership Development
- Supervise students’ research projects and dissertations
- Engage in scholarly activities
- Promote public events and outreach in this discipline
- Facilitate training, workshops, seminars and executive courses on Leadership and Social Responsibility
- Attend IPLG meetings and university committee meetings
- Coordinate projects on Leadership in the Institute
- Perform high-level administrative functions in the Leadership Unit

Qualifications:
University degree in Management, Leadership, Administration, Governance, or a related discipline at Masters or PhD level.

Experience
• Demonstrable ability to contribute to the Institute’s research profile and an outstanding record of research and publication in Leadership and Management.
• Teaching experience at Graduate level
• At least 5 years experience working in Leadership Development, Management or Governance.
• Experience working in a leadership position

Key Attributes
Applicants must have strong networking skills in order to work with the local, regional and international public and private sector organizations as well as civil society. Strong candidates will be conversant with Leadership Development in Africa. Other desirable skills include the ability to work in a team, and respect for diversity.

The establishment of the Institute is Africa University’s response to the leadership and government challenges that characterise Africa’s social, economic and political environment. These challenges require innovative approaches to higher education development so as to increase its relevance to measures that contribute to capacity building for leadership and governance relative to Africa’s advancement. Its academic programmes are designed to address problems of peace, leadership and governance in a holistic framework; to expose students to the conventional theories in these three areas; and to focus on the practical relevance and the translation of those theories to the African context. A considerable research agenda is thus envisaged as a foundation input into the on-going curriculum development process. In March 2003, the Institute enrolled its first cohort of students in the Master’s degree and Graduate diploma programmes in Peace and Governance. The qualification is unique in that it is an innovation that reflects the skills and aptitudes required of Africa’s future leaders.
