For the past eight years, we have watched our birth country of Rwanda descend further into repression resulting from the political intolerance of its leaders.

Political reform 2013-2016

Somalis are anxious to dust off their tarnished name, which has been associated with countless ills. So far the financial and political efforts paid to bring about a “Somali Republic” from the ruins we have all lived through for the last two generations have not yielded better results.

Democratic constitutions provide legal instruments consisting of petitions and motions to the citizens, including elected officials, to promote public policy, seek justice and accountability, resolve political differences and conflicts, and ensure public participation in the political process.

It is almost a quarter of a century since Somalia lost its statehood and status as a relevant member of the international community. Since then Somalia’s name has become synonymous with a failed state, and the word ‘Somalization’ the 21st century’s new term for ‘Balkanization’.

KAMPALA, September 9, 2015: The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA Network) is strongly condemning the recent ruling of a Somali Court against a 15-year old rape victim which encourages a culture of impunity, especially in cases where government officials are involved.

The International Community should learn when and when not to interfere in the domestic affairs of Somalia.

In 2012, the Somali government released a statement ordering internally displaced persons living inside Mogadishu to move out of the city.
