Kariobangi Murders: Call for Justice & International Action
A Statement of the Kenyan Community Abroad (http://www.kenyansabroad.org)
Issued March 5, 2002
The Kenyan Community Abroad (KCA) condemns, in the strongest possible terms,
the murder of innocent Kenyans in the recent Kariobangi rampage! That a mob
of 300 hooligans could occasion such carnage in a country of “law and order”
is a crime of the highest degree.
Through word and deed, the government must leave no stone unturned in
pursuing the murderers. It must further explain how this breakdown in law
came about. It must bring culprits to justice, swiftly. It must further
ensure that the nothing so grisly happens again on our soil.
There are suggestions that the murders were politically motivated. This is a
credible angle to investigate conclusively and must demonstrate convincing
results. And if indeed these crimes are politically motivated, those behind
this evil must face the full gravity of the law.
As a country, we have become all too used to the prelude to the election
being violence, murder, mayhem and destruction of property. In the past, it
has happened in Molo, Laikipia, Mombasa and Gucha. Recently, we have seen
stirrings in Kibera, leave alone the meaningless, inhuman kiosk cleanup in
Kenyan towns. This MUST not continue.
Kenyans have lived peacefully for years on end in the cities or in the rural
areas. Anyone claiming these clashes have an ethnic basis is leading Kenyans
the wrong path.
KCA is calling for all Kenyans at home and abroad to move to action. We must
send the message to Nairobi that the country’s leadership stands to be
isolated internationally if they continue down the path of destruction they
have embarked on.
KCA promises lead a campaign of action, targeted at governments of countries
in which members reside, to channel the unmistakable message of protest. Our
message will be loud and clear to the Commonwealth, the OAU, and the United
Nations. Government of Kenya’s friendly governments must wake up to the fact
that they are coddling a regime that is complicit in murder in our country.
It is time they woke up to reality that a human life must be regarded as
human life. The murder of a Zimbabwean white farmer should cause as much
concern in the world as the senseless murder of a Kenyan in a Nairobi
street.
As Kenyans we have tolerated and become desensitized to murders and the flow
of innocent blood in our midst. Our people’s welfare continues to decline by
the day. The hopes of many young people have been dashed. In turn, these
young people become targets for recruitment into gangs that are then used in
pointless destruction.
As we enter the election period, we must think consider whether to vote more
of the same or bring real change. We stand at a cross-roads where we can
choose more of the same in the future or usher into power a new era that
will assure security of our people.
Long live Kenya.
Signed
