SEAAFSR-E
The Southern & Eastern African Association for Farming Systems Research-Extension is one of the largest and most respected farming systems associations in the world. After its 1994 founding Conference in Swaziland, SAAFSR-E has held conferences in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana & South Africa. In 1998 it hosted 600 delegates from over 50 countries at the global AFSRE Conference, and united with east African colleagues to form SEAAFSR-E.
Current President is Dr. Zainab Semgalawe of Tanzania, with Councillors from Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa. Membership costs the equivalent of US $10 per year and entitles members to newsletters etc. The INSTITUTIONALISATION OF THE FARMING SYSTEMS APPROACH IN
EASTERN & SOUTHERN AFRICA was published by SAAFSR-E in association withFARMESA in 1998, and copies are available at US $10 + US$8 for postage & packing from SEAAFSR-E's Secretary Richard Fowler ([email protected] fax +27 33 3434281).
FARMERS
An essential yet all too frequently ignored partner in the Farming Systems Approach is the farmer. SEAAFSR-E's Council believes that every effort must be made to encourage farmers to join the Association and participate in its Conferences, and to this end
* is making a concerted effort to find funding to enable farmers from throughout the region to attend SEAAFSR-E 2001;
* is offering a President's Award of US $100 for the best farmer presented paper;
* would encourage professionals to include farmers as co-authors.
ACCOMODATION & TRANSPORT
A list of alternative accommodation facilities will be sent out before the conference. As a general guide, the range of reasonable accommodation in Nairobi is between US$20 to US$65 for bed and breakfast. Nairobi also has its share of several 5-star hotels like Inter-Continental, Nairobi Serena, Grand Regency etc. for those ready to spend a little more.
