La police congolaise détient deux journalistes à Kamako

(JED/IFEX) - Delphin Manesa et Jean Kambamba, journalistes à la Radio
Arc-en-ciel, émettant à Kamako, ont été arrêtés le 28 décembre 2004, par un
groupe de policiers conduits par Mutombo Tshisala, sous commissaire
principal de la police de cette localité. Kamako est situé à environ 180
kilomètres de Tshikapa, deuxième grande ville de la province du Kasaï
occidental (centre de la République démocratique du Congo).

Selon des informations parvenues à JED, les policiers étaient à la recherche
de Idrissa Katawa, directeur de la Radio Arc-en-ciel, pour avoir dénoncé le
comportement des policiers de Kamako, lors d'une émission intitulée "Tranche
libre", diffusée le 28 décembre, entre 7h45 et 8h00 (heure locale). Katawa
aurait accusé les policiers d'utiliser de la force pour pousser la
population commerçante de cette localité à intégrer le nouveau marché qui y
a été construit, pendant qu'elle s'y refusait.

Two journalists arrested in Kamako

(JED/IFEX) - Delphin Manesa and Jean Kambamba, journalists with Radio
Arc-en-ciel, broadcasting out of Kamako, were arrested on 28 December 2004
by a group of police officers acting under the orders of Mutombo Tshisala,
the municipality's deputy chief of police. Kamako is located approximately
180 kilometres from Tshikapa, the second largest city in West Kasaï
province, central Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to JED sources, the officers were looking for Idrissa Katawa, the
station's director, after a 28 December broadcast of the programme "Tranche
libre" ("Open Airwaves") in which Katawa condemned the behaviour of Kamako
police officers. Katawa reportedly accused the police of using force to
compel local merchants to relocate to a newly-built marketplace.
