All foreign language programmes are based on an intercultural and communicative approach and are designed to provide thorough competence in the spoken and written form of the target language.

Duties:
Teaching of Mandarin language, culture and literature at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level • development of course material, and assessment of opportunities for academic and short courses • performing administrative and organisational functions as required by the Department • student development • active participation in the Department's research and publication programme • community involvement • liaising with cultural representatives of countries where Mandarin is spoken • liaising with the Centre for Chinese Studies.
Requirements:
An appropriate academic qualification in Mandarin Language & Literature Studies or Mandarin as a foreign language or a related field (a doctorate and a proven research and/or publication record for appointment as Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer and a Master's degree or equivalent for appointment as Lecturer) • experience in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language • ability to maintain and improve the existing academic offering for Mandarin • proven ability to develop new course material • ability to function within a team • ability to communicate fluently in Mandarin and English.
Recommendations:
Proven interest in and record of research • experience in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language in a foreign context • knowledge of Afrikaans or another European language.
