Certificate in Youth Leadership

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the second
annual, Certificate in Youth Participation for Africa's Development
Processes. This will take place in Lusaka, Zambia from the 29th of May –
the 9th of June 2006. This leadership training is being offered jointly
by the African Youth Parliament (AYP), Young Women in Action (YWA) and
the Coady International Institute.

The certificate is designed to develop the knowledge and skills of youth
leaders and advocates to increase their influence and to improve the
quality of their participation in the African Peer Review Mechanism
(APRM), the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the
African Union and its processes. Recognizing that youth often lack the
requisite skills to engage in these processes, participants will develop
facilitation and peer training skills and learn to use advocacy tools.
Participants will critically examine the assets of youth stakeholders as
well as the challenges to meaningful youth participation and voice
within the structures of African Union and the NEPAD.

”Dr. Machel commended the President for acceding to the APRM and noted
that Kenya had volunteered as one of the first four countries to be
reviewed. She noted that the team had interacted with a broad range of
stakeholders and in particular had been particularly invigorated by the
interaction with the Kenyan Youth, which could be shared as best
practice.” - The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Support Mission to
Kenya, 26th to 27th July 2004 Communiqué
The certificate targets youth leaders in Africa and in the African
Diaspora to build on their existing skills, equip them with further
leadership skills, and empower them with information and networking
opportunities in order to effectively engage the APRM processes in their
countries. They will share experience, build skills and develop plans
for action that will support them as they undertake the challenges of
having youth stakeholder participate in the APRM process.

Applications are open to all young Africans between 20 – 28 years of age
